It’s official: custom design, mood lighting and sensory gardens are going to be everywhere this season. Yelp has revealed its annual report to reveal the most-loved home design trends, giving inspiration to those looking to give their home a refresh as we head into the warmer months.
To identify the latest home and outdoor trends, experts at Yelp analyzed consumer searches from the last year. Coming out on top was mood lighting. Soft, layered lighting gives a relaxing, ambient feel to any space as opposed the the harsh, bright light that larger overhead lights often emit. After all, with the longer days and shorter nights in full swing, there’s a likelihood that many are using less artificial light in their home.
“Consider diversifying your lighting sources and their placement throughout a space,” suggested Yelp trend expert Tara Lewis. “Try stylish paper lanterns, globe table lamps, or statement floor lighting. Pair them with soft, warm light bulbs to set the mood,”
Adding a touch of luxury to the home is at top of mind for this season, with premium self-care-forward appliances dominated searches; plunge tubs, saunas and steam showers are among the most-wanted bathroom items.
Fashion tends to pivot over into home design, and this season is no exception. The coquette trend took social media by storm earlier this year, with giving a hyper-feminine makeover to their everyday with the addition of soft, pastel tones and ribbons and bows. In interior design, this has translated to delicate textiles and muted colors.
Similarly, color analysis has been trending in the beauty world, and it is now at the top of people’s minds for interior design — searches for paint consultants have risen by 20 percent.
A nod to the nostalgia trend, retro styles are making a comeback. Checkerboard tiles are a particular favorite, adding depth and character to any space. There is also a wider appreciation for pre-loved furniture, with searches for chair reupholstery and furniture repair up by 199% and 24%, respectively.
Meanwhile, custom design searches have seen a significant increase as renters and house owners alike want to give their homes a personalized touch. Interest in custom curtains has risen by 60 percent, while custom doors are up by 30 percent. Closet systems have had 40 percent more interest over the last year, showing a desire to create a tidy and harmonious space.
“Consider what kind of functional updates would make an impact on daily tasks,” Lewis explains. “Struggling to find your favorite shirt in a cluttered closet? A new closet system can be a game-changer for organization, maximizing your space and highlighting meaningful items, like your display-worthy shoe collection,”
Finally, as patio season is here, so are the desires to amp up outdoor spaces. Interest in home gardening as a whole rose by 41 percent over the last year, and sensory gardens are among the favorite trends at current. Sensory gardens are the ideal summer installation thanks to the use of fragrant flora such as lavender and rosemary; both can keep mosquitoes at bay.
