“You can use decorative pillows and arrange these in descending order, starting with your sleeping pillows against the headboard and the smaller, feature pillows at the front,” she said.

“Fold a second bedsheet over the top of your duvet for the aesthetic of a premium hotel and finish with a folded soft throw to tie everything together.”

She said artwork and plants enhance the room’s appearance with textures and patterns.

“Stylish plants include hanging ivy, Chinese evergreen, and the peace lily,” she said.

“You can place them on nightstands, shelves, windowsills, and even on the floor in the corners to create a peaceful, green sanctuary.

“Statement pieces provide a focal point where you can build the design of your bedroom around.

“Professional designers use this technique to create impact in their work and you can use it when figuring out how to create a luxury bedroom.

“A statement piece can be anything, from a bold and colorful piece of art to an elegant sliding wardrobe.”

GRAND SPACES

Denham said larger rooms “naturally feel grander” so it’s important to reduce clutter as much as possible.

“Firstly, clutter can make any space feel smaller,” she said.

“In a small house or apartment, every inch of floor space is needed, so consider how to keep on top of things.

“Try adding clever storage ideas that are likely to work well in the space you have.

“To stash away your belongings out of sight, add shelving so that your things aren’t taking up countertops and side tables.”

She advised embracing a “minimalistic” approach to decor while being strategic about where to place furniture.

She said every element should have a purpose.

“Utility is one of the main drivers to maximizing the space,” she said.

“As well as choosing minimalistic furniture, make sure you place it in a way that allows natural light in.

“Natural light can make a room appear larger, so move items like sofas and beds around to ensure nothing is blocking the windows.

“Now that your windows are clear, you can think about other ways to introduce light into the room.

“Mirrors create the illusion of space and reflect light.

“Try hanging a large wall mirror opposite your window and you’ll see how the dimensions of the room seem bigger.”

FABULOUS FURNISHINGS

Denham advised being cautious of popular trends on apps such as Pinterest as they typically go out of style.

“Ignoring trends can be hard, and so it’s not about completely cutting yourself off from them but instead figuring out which trends speak to you the most,” she said.

“If you see a trend and want to buy new items that fit this, think beforehand if you really enjoy the aesthetic, if it will go with your pre-existing items, or if you’ll have to buy more items to match.

Although you may be able to save on your paint brand, clever finishes can take your interior up a level.

“And most importantly, will you still love this new item in a year when it won’t be as trendy?”

She recommended shopping around for furnishings such as curtains and cushions.

Also, ask yourself if the price matches the quality of the product.

“Consider up-cycling your old items, shop around in charity shops and online markets for pre-loved gems, or hit up the high-street sales,” she said.

LAVISH LIVING ROOM

Denham warned that it’s important not to overlook even the smallest details when renovating a .

“Often over-looked finishes such as the skirting boards and the ceiling can cause your home to look unfinished,” she said.

“Although you may be able to save on your paint brand, clever finishes can take your interior up a level.”

She advised against penny-pinching when buying items such as beds and sofas.

She said it’s worth “splurging” on good quality and comfort.

“Typically, these big-ticket items are expensive, so many people can be tempted to look at cheaper alternatives to avoid dropping a lot of money,” she said.

“However, the quality of the framework and materials used will determine how long your item will last for, as they say – buy cheap buy twice.”
