Another longtime, family-owned regional retailer has announced plans to permanently close.
Fecera’s Furniture is going out of business after 78 years.
A liquidation sale begins on Thursday, May 23 at Fecera’s 65,000-square-foot Berks County store, 4710 Penn Ave. in South Heidelberg Township. No firm date has been given for when the doors will close for good.
The closing announcement was made Tuesday, and comes as owner Connie Fecera said she plans to join her husband, Artie Fecera, in retirement.
“We are deeply grateful for the loyal support of our patrons over the past 78 years,” Fecera said in a statement. “It has been our family’s great privilege to help furnish the homes of so many families and to care for our community.”
The history
Since its founding in 1946, the Fecera family has worked to build a reputation as a “reliable one-stop-shop for high quality furniture and mattresses,” according to a press release.
Fecera’s was founded by Arthur J. Fecera, and his wife, Inez, in a small storefront in Birdsboro, the company said in its announcement. Over the years, the company expanded its operations, eventually adding stores in Pottstown in 1960, Reading in 1972 and Collegeville in 1992.
Those smaller stores were all closed by 2001, following the opening of Fecera’s in South Heidelberg Township — the largest building owned by Fecera Furniture.
Arthur J. Fecera died in 1972, and passed the family business to his son Arthur A. (Artie) Fecera, according to the release. When Artie Fecera retired in 2014, his wife, Connie, continued to run the business with the help of their son, Chris Fecera. When his father retired, Chris Fecera was named president of the company, a position he continues to hold.
